VILLAGE OF HAGAMAN

"Nestled in the northern part of the Town of Amsterdam is the picturesque Village of Hagaman, one of the county's historic villages, named for Joseph Hagaman who first settled in the area in 1777. Hagaman came to this area from Dutchess County and was the son of Henry Hagaman, a native of Holland. He purchased 400 acres in the sparsely populated segment of that area which at that time was part of the large Caughnawaga District."

"The real early history of Hagaman and many of the other settlers of the area is not too well documented, as they arrived during the war, but many of the settlers fought on the side of the Colonists, and the graves of some of these heroes are found in the old Hagaman Cemetery where Joseph Hagaman and some of his family are buried."

"For many years the City of Amsterdam was known as the carpet capital of the nation, but this great industry in Amsterdam had its start in Hagaman."

"Industry continued to grow in the Hagaman area, with the knitting business leading the way. Star Hosiery Mills of H. Pawling and Son was the oldest establishment of this kind in the county. (The Pawling family were the builders of what is today the St. Jude Retreat House™.)"

"Today the village has industry in the form of a leather mill and a firm which manufactures insulation for home and industrial structures (Bonded Insulation Co.)."

 Calvary Reformed Church
This Church is the oldest church in Hagaman. It was erected in 1835 as the Presbyterian North Church. But, in 1855 it changed to a Reformed Church. Today it is called The Calvary Reformed Church. This church sits directly across the street from the Retreat House™. All guests are continually invited to Sunday services and larger events such as Christmas services, and Easter services.
St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church
St. Stephen's is a small Roman Catholic Church on North Pawling Street. This Catholic church, although small, has all the charm and attributes of the typical Catholic buildings in America. Beautiful stained glass, sculpted statues and classic wood pews. Many of the guests that are Roman Catholic take a short stroll over to St. Stephens for Mass with Father Matuliwitz on Sunday mornings. Masses are held on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. Daily mass and Rosary are every weekday morning.

 

 

United Methodist Church
The United Methodist Church sits on South Pawling Street, one block from the retreat house. Every Sunday morning services are held for this small but active congregation. This church epitomizes what a small town church should feel like. It has a warm and personal atmosphere, and all are welcome.

St Jude Retreat House Success Rates and Statistics
The Saint Jude Retreat House conducts an annual survey through its parent company Baldwin Research Institute, Inc. The survey is taken every three to six months.
