The parent company of the St. Jude Retreat Houses™ contracts an outside research organization to do a follow up study of program graduates from the authentic St. Jude Retreat Houses™ each year. Program graduates to be surveyed are selected at random, and they are contacted along with a corroborating witness, usually the person who helped them to attend the Jude Thaddeus Program™. Only when the witness confirms that a program graduate is abstinent are the graduates entered into the sober/drug free category. St. Jude Thaddeus, Inc. was incorporated in 2006. They opened their first house in 2007. Baldwin Research Institute, Inc. opened the first St. Jude Retreat House™ in 1992. Prior to 1992 there certainly were other non-12-step programs that Baldwin Research Institute™ has studied extensively while developing the Jude Thaddeus Program™. As a treatment modality, 12 step programs are relatively young coming onto the scene in the late 1940s as a direct result of the Alcoholics Anonymous movement. Prior to the 1940s people were treated for substance abuse problems without the 12 steps. St. Jude Thaddeus Retreat House’s claim to be the oldest non-12-step program in the US is a testament to their ignorance regarding substance abuse treatment in the US and the history of helping people to overcome substance abuse problems.
8. FACT, The St. Jude Thaddeus Retreat House identified their program as a Christian program as recently as November 2007 and changed that classification for marketing purposes only.
